Working in Medicine - Dr Karen Burns, Lead NCHD, Medicine
For me, working in Beaumont alongside experts in medical and surgical fields has been fulfilling and inspiring. It's a busy hospital with challenges, but the varied workload is engaging, and the training I have received has fine-tuned my clinical skills. I have had a positive experience here as an SHO and SpR, and the focus on postgraduate medical training and tutorials was valuable.
Working in Neurosurgery - Dr John Duddy, Lead NCHD, Surgery
Beaumont Hospital is the National Neurosurgical Centre in Ireland, covering 20 of the 26 counties in the Republic. It is a busy unit with 11 consultants covering all neurosurgical subspecialties. Working in this unit, you will gain experience in Paediatric Neurosurgery, Trauma, Skull base & Vascular surgery, Neuro-oncology, Epilepsy surgery, and Complex Spine surgery. You will gain hands-on experience in managing patients in the neuro-intensive care unit. There is daily neuroradiology teaching led by the Senior Registrar. There are also dedicated weekly Neuro-oncology and Neurovascular meetings where you will learn about imaging and patient management. This is a busy but exciting job which offers many learning opportunities for doctors interested in neurosurgery but would also be of value to those who intend to practice in critical care, paediatrics, general surgery, trauma & orthopaedics, and neurology.
