Translational Research on MRSA and Healthcare-Associated Infection

In conjunction with the Dublin Dental School and Hospital, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, and in collaboration with the National MRSA Reference Laboratory, located at St. James’s Hospital, RCSI/Beaumont Hospital were awarded a major translational research grant in 2006 by the Health Research Board to look at aspects of healthcare-associated infection including MRSA.

Specifically, this research is assessing reservoirs of MRSA in hospitals, which might not otherwise be detected, the value of rapid MRSA detection, the role of the environment in MRSA transmission, the impact of new technologies for enhanced environmental cleaning and a comparison of strains of MRSA recovered as part of this research project with isolates recovered from other hospitals in Ireland and beyond.

The multi-disciplinary collaborative nature of this project and the involvement of a number of institutions enriches the research focus and is likely to contribute to the success of the research efforts.  Ultimately, however, the research will be judged not just on the usual criteria, e.g. scientific publications, but on the impact it will have, not just in Beaumont Hospital but also on other hospitals in Ireland.
