Department of Radiology

About us

The Radiology Department is located on the Lower Ground floor of Beaumont Hospital. It offers an extensive radiology service to all patients attending Beaumont Hospital either as an in-patient or an outpatient from across the country and in particular the Dublin North East Region.

St. Joseph's Hospital in Raheny forms part of “Beaumont Hospital” and as such the radiology services provided there are integral to the Beaumont Radiology Service Provision.  

The imaging modalities available include General Radiology, Fluoroscopy, Neuroradiology, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Mammography, Ultrasound, Interventional Radiology - Therapeutic & Diagnostic, and Nuclear Medicine. The radiology department also provides a service to the Cardiac Catherisation Laboratory, Theatre, Speech Therapy and Endoscopy as well as servicing every ward within the Hospital.

These services are provided by Radiographers, Radiologists, Physicists and Nurses alongside clerical, administration and portering staff. Beaumont Hospital is a teaching hospital and regularly student radiographers and medical students will be present in the department.

Beaumont Hospital Radiology Department refurbished its Nuclear Medicine Department in 2016, installing two dual-headed 16 multi- slice SPECT/CT cameras, a new radio-pharmacy, new patient changing facilities and wait area.   

In 2018 The CT department underwent a major refurbishment, installing two 128 multi- slice CT scanners, new patient changing facilities and patient waiting area.  

In 2020 a new 1.5T MRI scanner was installed adjacent to the existing 3T MRI scanner.

Also in 2020 the Radiology directorate stepped into primary care service delivery with the introduction of an Outpatient ultrasound service in OMNI shopping centre.

The Stroke Thrombectomy Service is a national service run by the Imaging and Interventional Radiology Directorate. This has undergone huge changes in 2020 with a major capital build project that delivered two new state of the art Bi-Plane interventional systems into the department.

Beaumont Hospital Radiology Department joined the National Integrated Medical Imaging System (NIMIS) in Aug 2011. This project has invested over €40m in providing state of the art electronic radiology system. NIMIS will make Ireland’s radiological services ‘filmless’ and enable secure and rapid movement of patient image data throughout the health service. Currently there are over 50 hospitals using the system, meaning that images and reports can be shared securely with relevant medical professionals across hospitals nationally.

Hours

CT and MRI are available between the hours of 8.00am - 7.30pm, on an appointment only basis. All other imaging modalities are available between 8.30am - 4.30pm, again on an appointment only basis. 

Radiology Walk-In Service

Beaumont Radiology department operates a walk-in service for GP referred chest x-rays.  Patients can walk in with their GP referral letter and get a chest x-ray without an appointment between the hours of 08:30 to 15:00 Monday to Friday

Referring a patient to Beaumont Radiology

Beaumont Radiology Department will only accept GP referrals sent via Healthlink.  Referrals sent via email or post will no longer be accepted.  GPs who are not registered with Healthlink can do so by going to www.healthlink.ie and selecting the Application Form tab on the home page. Catchment Areas

Beaumont Radiology Department accepts GP referrals for patients that live in the following areas:

Dublin 3, 5, 9, 11, 13, 17

Dublin North County/Fingal (except the parts of Fingal in Dublin 15 which are serviced by Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown)

It is the patient’s own home address that is used to determine catchment area NOT the GP’s surgery address.  For example if the GP is located in Sutton, Dublin 13 but the patient’s address is Donnybrook, Dublin 4 the GP referral will not be accepted in Beaumont.

 

National Pregnancy Guidelines

Beaumont Hospital’s Radiology Department through the Radiation Safety Committee is adapting the National Pregnancy Policy. This policy was developed to standardised actions in the management of female patients of child bearing capacity (12-55 years old) presenting for a medical radiation exposure between the diaphragm and symphisis pubis and any Radionuclide imaging procedure. 

This policy has been endorsed by professional bodies that composed the National Pregnancy Policy working group that have initiated this project: The Irish Institute of Radiographers and Radiation Therapist, The Irish Physicist Association in Medicine and the faculty of Radiologist.
