The first Schwartz Rounds in Beaumont Hospital took place on January 26th to a packed audience of over 120 colleagues.
We are so grateful to our wonderful panellists – Fiona McInerney, Social Work, Patricia Keoghan, Ward Clerk, St Claires Ward, Siobhan McHale, Consultant Psychiatrist and Fiona Markey, Medical Directorate Nurse Manager – being first is never easy.
Under The title of ‘A Patient I’ll never forget’ each panellist described an experience in their work that had a lasting impact on them, professionally and personally. These unique stories of ever-occurring dilemmas and profound sadness in the course of day to day caring for patients and their families generated much empathy and understanding from the large interdisciplinary participant audience. Following this, facilitators Ailin O’Dea, Clinical Psychologist and David Moore, Anaesthetist facilitated reflection and interaction from participants who were encouraged to share their own experiences, and further explore the issues raised. For many the space to listen respectfully and to engage in wholly present self-reflection was sufficient.
Schwartz Rounds is a forum for hospital staff from all backgrounds to come together to talk about the emotional and social impacts of caring for patients, families and colleagues. The aim is to offer a safe environment in which to share experiences and insights and indeed to reflect internally, prompted by the sharing of others . The generosity of the Panellists was greatly appreciated and this was experienced and conveyed wholeheartedly.
