Thursday October 04, 2018
On Monday 16th July, the extension to the existing RCSI Smurfit Building on the Beaumont Campus opened. The impressive new interior incorporates a student Concourse, break-out space with a coffee shop and communal and dining areas on the existing ground floor directly accessed from the existing entrance lobby.
The 3 levels of the new extension are accessed via the new Student Concourse which is visually and physically connected to the Atrium space which contains a feature stair connecting all levels and acts as a town hall space within the building. These areas will create new leisure and communal areas for the students which will enhance the college experience. The new facilities will include a series of large flexible multi-functional tutorial rooms on the ground floor, open plan faculty offices and meeting spaces on the first floor and laboratory and research facilities on the second floor.
Opened in 2000, the Education and Research Centre (ERC), Smurfit Building is home to the first academic Clinical Research Centre to be established in Ireland. The building provides medical research and laboratory facilities, administration and education offices on the ground and second floors and tutorial rooms on the first floor. The building is directly connected to the main Hospital on two levels.
