Congratulations to the the Home Haemodialysis Team which last Monday scooped the Astellas Changing Tomorrow Award 2011 for Innovation. Started as a pilot in 2009, this programme has given many renal patients the freedom to carry out their own haemodialysis at home. On completion of their training, patients are monitored both in the clinic and the community.
This option has led to improved patient outcomes and significantly enhanced their quality of life. Home haemodialysis is now an established treatment choice for those patients for whom it is appropriate. The team in Beaumont Hospital are now developing a nocturnal home haemodialysis program which will enable patient to do their treatment while asleep, saving them valuable time.
