Orthoptic Department

About Us

An Orthoptist is a highly skilled health professional involved in the assessment, diagnosis and management of disorders of the eyes, extra ocular muscles and vision. Orthoptists are an important part of the eye care team and work in close association with the Ophthalmologist.

At Beaumont Hospital, we work with patients of all ages with a variety of symptoms as part of the Ophthalmology service.

Services

Clinics include:

1. Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinics
  • Stroke assessment and management - Ongoing projects for vision restoration therapy
  • Patients with double vision - prism therapy
  • Acquired brain injury
2. Visual field clinics
  • Pituitary visual field assessment
  • Glaucoma assessment
  • Visual field assessment on patients following Stroke
3. Orbital Clinics
  • Thyroid Eye Disease assessment
  • Ocular motility assessment following orbital injury
4. Squint Clinics
  • Pediatric assessment and management of reduced vision
  • Adult and paediatric assessment for strabismus surgery

Staff

Two whole-time equivalent (WTE) staff are employed at Beaumont. All staff members are Senior Orthoptists registered with the British and Irish Orthoptic Society practicing continued professional development.

Location

We work across two sites:

  • Beaumont Hospital: we are located at Clinic E in the Outpatients Department
  • National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire
