Dr. Niall Pender, Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist / Head of Department

Niall is a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. In addition to his role as Psychology Manager his work involves the assessment and management of patients with neurological and neurosurgical illnesses or injuries. He is Associate Professor in Neuropsychology in the Academic Unit of Neurology, Trinity College Dublin and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Niall is currently Chair of the Board of Headway and member of the boards of Research Motor Neurone and the Neurological Alliance of Ireland.


Mr. Mark Mulrooney, Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist     

Mark works with neurology patients with a focus on pre/post surgical patients with epilepsy and supportive counselling with patients with this condition. He also provides services to patients with other neurological conditions including MS, Parkinson's disease and also in the Memory Clinic. He has a particular interest in supporting patients with General Learning Disability attending the Hospital.

Dr. Jennifer Wilson O'Raghallaigh, Principal Clinical Psychologist

Jenny is the Principal Clinical Psychologist working on the Liaison Psychiatry Team.  She specializes in the assessment and treatment of patients in the hospital who are experiencing significant distress.  Jenny manages the Mindfulness and Relaxation Centre at Beaumont Hospital (www.beaumont.ie/marc) and delivered and managed the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme for patients of the hospital and the Better Health, Better Living (BHBL) programme, which was the Beaumont Hospital delivery of the Chronic Disease Self Management Program from Stanford University.  The free Chronic Disease programme can now be accessed through the HSE

Jenny has a background in personality assessment as well as training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, EMDR, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Mindfulness Based Interventions, and Radically Open DBT.  Jenny is a master trainer for the Chronic Disease Self Management Program, the Chronic Pain Self Management Programme, Cancer Thrive and Survive, and Building Better Caregivers.

Dr. Ailín O'Dea, Senior Clinical Psychologist

Ailín has worked as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in cystic fibrosis (CF) since 2012.  She has a particular interest in psychological therapy and has completed training in Gestalt therapy, Motivational Interviewing and currently training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).  Ailín engages with CF patients around issues such as managing treatments, coping with mood difficulties/ emotional distress and supporting patients to pursue what is important to them alongside managing their condition.  She is part of the network of psychologists working in CF in Ireland.  She has developed a booklet about self-care for people with CF, “Living Well with CF: Taking Care of You”.  She has a special interest in the role of the arts in health care settings.

Mr. Jonathan Gallagher, Senior Psychologist

Jonathan is a Senior Psychologist in the Cardiology Department, where he provides a psychology service to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme. His work ranges from psycho-education to therapeutic intervention for psychology difficulties co-occurring with heart disease. Jonathan has a background in Health Psychology as well as specialist training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing. Areas of interest include: assessment and intervention in cardiac patients; stress management; health beliefs, illness cognitions and health behaviour change; as well as self-management in heart failure.

Dr. Ciara Keogh-Jennett, Senior Clinical and Counselling Psychologist

Ciara is a Senior Clinical and Counselling Psychologist who works with the cochlear implant programme. She works with children, adults and their families with a profound hearing loss. In the paediatric service she conducts cognitive and behavioural assessments for children and engages in therapeutic work with children and/or their families. In adult services, Ciara provides psychological support to patients pre-implantation where required, or in adjusting to life post-implant. She may also be involved in assessing a person’s suitability for implant. 

Ciara also works as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in Cystic Fibrosis (CF).  She has a particular interest in psychological therapy and has completed training in Emotion Focused Therapy, Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural therapy.  Ciara works with CF patients around issues such as low mood, anxiety, procedural anxiety, treatment adherence and quality of life.

Ciara previously worked in the Renal Transplant service providing psychological assessment and support to potential kidney donors and dialysis patients.

Dr. Sarah Clarke, Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist

Sarah is a clinical neuropsychologist who works with patients with a variety of conditions that impact on brain functioning. Such conditions include brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, dementia, MS, encephalitis, brain tumours and functional neurological symptoms such as non-epileptic attack and functional movement difficulties. Sarah works with both in-patients and out-patients, and carries out assessments and interventions to help those affected cognitively, emotionally and psychologically by their conditions. Sarah is a committee member of PSI’s Division of Neuropsychology and of the Irish Brain Council.

  Dr. Paul Horgan, Senior Clinical Psychologist

Paul works as a Senior Clinical Psychologist on the live kidney donor programme. He provides intervention and assessment support to potential live kidney donors and recipients; the support is provided during their pre and post-transplant journeys, primarily using CBT and CFT models. His main clinical interest is in supporting people to manage their experience of living with chronic illness.


Dr. Diane Gillan, Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist

Diane is a clinical neuropsychologist who provides a service to patients with a range of neurological and neurosurgical illnesses or injuries such as dementia, brain tumours, stroke and acquired brain injury. She also completes neuropsychology assessments as part of the National Epilepsy Surgery Programme. Diane also provides a service to patients with functional neurological symptoms such as non-epileptic attack disorder and functional motor or sensory symptoms. She is also a honorary senior clinical lecturer with RCSI; honorary clinical lecturer with TCD and part-time lecturer in DCU. She is a committee member of PSI’s Division of Neuropsychology. Diane is also interested in research in the areas of neuropsychology role in epilepsy surgery, FND, attachment processes in medical conditions, neurosurgery and neurodegeneration.

Dr. Vicky Cooper-Lunt, Senior Clinical Psychologist in Psycho-Oncology

Vicky is Senior Clinical Psychologist in Beaumont Hospital and the St Luke's Radiation Oncology Service. Patients and their loved ones can access psychological intervention to assist in adjusting to their diagnosis and demanding treatment through direct assessment, therapy, consultation, and psychoeducation.  Vicky works collaboratively with Medical Oncology, Psychiatry, and Palliative Care teams to ensure continuity of psychological care for Oncology patients.  In addition to her clinical role she presents on a number of academic courses including nursing and Radiation therapy, and is involved in ongoing research, service evaluation and audit.

Dr. Isabela Caramlau, Senior Clinical Psychologist

Isabela is a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the Cardiology Department. She has a background in physical health, with a particular interest in adjustment to living with a chronic condition. Isabela has specialist training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, and Compassion Focused Therapy.

Isabela works as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside doctors, nurses, dieticians, and pharmacists, encouraging a psychological approach in their work. She provides psychological assessment and therapeutic intervention to people with a cardiac condition, as well as psychological support for carers. In her work, she draws from a variety of psychological therapies to reduce patients’ psychological distress, help them develop new coping strategies, and enhance their quality of life and wellbeing. She is also involved in ongoing evidence-based service development and evaluation, in order to ensure an optimum level of patient care, in line with national and international guidelines.

Isabela teaches on the RCSI Postgraduate Diploma in Coronary Care Nursing.

Dr. Rosemary Keane, Senior Clinical Psychologist

Rose is a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the Pain Team. As part of a multidisciplinary team, Rose provides psychological formulation, pain education and therapeutic intervention for people living with persistent pain. The goal is to reduce distress, support development of new coping strategies and enhance quality of life. She has a particular interest in contextual cognitive behavioural approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and their applications to persistent pain.  Rose has a strong interest and background in research and is involved in ongoing evidence-based service development and evaluation.

Dr. Annette Lloyd, Senior Clinical Psychologist

Annette is a Senior Clinical Psychologist working with Motor Neurone Disease and Huntington’s Disease patients. She has a background working in adult mental health with a particular interest in trauma. Annette has specialist training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion Focussed Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy. Annette works as part of a multi-disciplinary team across in-patients and out-patients. She completes psychological assessments, neuropsychological assessments and therapeutic interventions with individuals with Motor Neurone Disease and Huntington’s Disease. She is involved in service development, audit and evaluation and staff support. Clinical and research interests include neurodegenerative conditions, group psychological interventions, trauma and caregiver interventions.

Ms. Lauren Walsh, Department Secretary

Lauren co-ordinates the activities of the Department of Psychology.  She organises clinics and provides up to date information on scheduling to patients and referrers.  Lauren has many years of experience working in the health service, and provides information and friendly support to patients and staff.
