Education and Training
After graduating from UCD Mr Sweeney entered basic surgical training and completed higher surgical training in neurosurgery in Ireland. During this time he received several awards and prizes and completed his doctorate in medicine in the field of neuro-oncology. On completion of his training, he received the Professor W.A.L. McGowan Medal and the Colles Travelling Fellowship in Surgery Medal. He has completed international fellowships in neurosurgery in Lyon, France, and NHNN, Queen's Square, London. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
Clinical Specialty Interest
His clinical interest is epilepsy surgery and neuro-oncology with a special interest in using advanced imaging and computer modeling techniques together with intra-operative monitoring and mapping strategies to improve patient outcomes.
His general neurosurgical practice involves the management of hydrocephalus (inc neuro-endoscopy), degenerative spine conditions, and cranial trauma.
Academic Interest
He has a special academic interest in neuro-oncology, onco-epilepsy, and epilepsy and has close academic relationships with RCSI and Trinity College Dublin. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer for RCSI.
