Occupational Therapy Department

Occupational Therapy is a health care profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by enabling people to do things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying the environment to better support participation. About Us

The Occupational Therapy Service is provided across four sites, Beaumont Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, the Community Nursing Unit and St. Ita's Psychiatry of Old Age Service and our team of 26.5 therapists provide occupational therapy services to the following clinical specialities:

  • A&E
  • Care of the Elderly
  • General Medicine and Surgery
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedics, Vascular, and Plastics
  • Psychiatry of Old Age
  • Rehab Unit
  • Rheumatology
  • Stroke Care

Education

The department is committed to supporting undergraduate training in partnership with Trinity College, Dublin with a number of students completing their undergraduate placements in the service each year. 


Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD is actively supported through the department's continuing professional development and performance management frameworks. To that end, staff engage in a range of activities including in-service training, external CPD activities, individual performance feedback and 360° processes, personal development planning and team-based work to deliver the objectives set out in the department's Strategic Plan.

Postgraduate education is also supported with staff participating in Masters and PhD studies.


Hours

The department's core opening hours are 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.  Extended working hours are in place for certain clinical services to accommodate patient and service needs.
