St. Michael’s Ward in Beaumont Hospital is a ten-bed in-patient unit for men and women over 18 who want to address opiate addiction by detoxifying or stabilizing (57 admissions in 2007). Dr. John O’Connor, Consultant Addiction Psychiatrist, leads the programme and associated addiction centres refer patients in. The programme provides nursing, counselling and medical support using a holistic approach. Patients can also be assessed in the general hospital setting, including the emergency department, by referring to the substance misuse psychiatric registrar based in St. Michaels ward.
