Research and Education
The Department of Psychiatry moved to the Education and Research Centre, Beaumont Hospital following the appointment of Professor Kieran Murphy as Chair of Psychiatry Royal College of Surgeons in January 2002. We provide teaching at undergraduate level for medical students within the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and for elective students from other medical schools. The Department co-ordinates the RCSI Rotational Training Scheme in Psychiatry and provides both Basic and Higher Specialist Training in Psychiatry. Formal in-house education is provided to members of the team and includes weekly academic meetings comprising a journal club, case conference and regular lectures on specialised topics from guest speakers. We have regular clinical audit meetings and encourage all team members to participate.
Training of other medical, nursing and paramedical staff Education and support of hospital staff is provided both formally through organized lectures and informally on the wards and in A&E by all team members. Protocols for the management of alcohol detoxification and the treatment of acute behavioural disturbance have been devised and distributed throughout the hospital. We also provide talks for patients and their carer eg as part of the psycho-oncology service.
