Research
Our department has increased its’ research and audit efforts in the last three years with the appointment of Professor David Williams as Associate Professor of Geriatric & Stroke Medicine. Two of our previous Specialist registrars and our current Clinical Lecturer are completing MD theses.
The largest research study undertaken by our department is now in its’ second year. The ASPIRE-S study is a Health Research Board of Ireland funded 2-year project which is examining the secondary prevention and rehabilitative needs of patients recently discharged from hospital with a diagnosis of stroke. It is a collaborative project involving colleagues in the Mater and James Connolly Memorial Hospitals. It is led by a team of investigators in the departments of Geriatric and Stroke Medicine in these hospitals and our department & the Department of Psychology at Beaumont Hospital/RCSI . The project hopes to publish its main results by the end of 2013.
Audit activity takes place within our department, including collaboration in national and regional activity. This activity is focussed on a number of areas of specific interest including dementia, stroke, medication safety, syncope and osteoporosis.
