Cancer Clinical Trials and Research Unit (CCTU)

The Cancer Clinical Trials and Research Unit (CCTU), Beaumont Hospital conducts clinical, translational and outcomes research in patients with cancer across the Dublin North - North East region on behalf of the RCSI Hospital Group. A key aim of the work is to learn more about the pathophysiology of cancer and to deliver new therapies to improve quality-of-life and cancer survival, by conducting high quality research.

The CCTU is part of the department of Medicine and all research is led by Consultant Medical Oncologists and Haematologists.  Patients treated on clinical trials receive experimental therapy in Beaumont Hospital in addition to or in lieu of other standard anticancer treatment. Since recent advances in Cancer therapy are the direct result of high quality, prospective research, clinical trials are consistently seen as a core component of optimal patient treatment.

Clinical trials confer benefits in terms of additional patient support, access to new and potentially better therapies and possible cost savings. Our clinical trials are generally sponsored by Pharmaceutical Companies or by Cancer Trials Ireland (formerly the All Ireland Cooperative Oncology Research Group, ICORG), a National Network of Cancer Researchers.

The CCTU also conducts translational research studies, in collaboration with Professor Bryan Hennessy’s (Consultant Oncologist) laboratory in the RCSI and others. These studies focus on the investigation of blood and tissue biomarkers to improve our understanding of cancer biology and improve treatment selection for patients. We are involved in research studies for many different types of cancer, but have subspecialty interests in Breast Cancer, Primary Brain Tumours and malignancies of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

For further information please contact the unit on 01-809-2373, the Director Dr. Patrick Morris or one of the other Consultant Medical Oncologists or Haematologists.
