Neurosciences Services

Neurosurgery

The neurosurgical physiotherapy team specialises in the assessment and treatment of neurosurgical conditions such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, brain haemorrhage, brain and spinal cord tumours and spinal surgeries. The physiotherapy team strive to increase patient independence and function and to facilitate optimal discharge. All care is provided in conjunction with the neurosurgical multidisciplinary team.

The neurosurgical physiotherapy service provides care across a number of wards in Beaumont Hospital including Richmond, Adams McConnell, Brigid’s Wards. In addition, the physiotherapy team assess and treat critically ill patients post transfer from the Critical Care Units.

  • Spinal triage and rehabilitation

Neurology

The Neurology service provides inpatient and outpatient services.  The inpatient service provides management for a wide variety of neurological conditions admitted under the care of the Consultant Neurologists. 

The outpatient service includes attendance at multi-disciplinary Motor Neuron disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinsons Disease clinics.  Management of spasticity includes a pilot monthly physiotherapy led Botulinum toxin injection therapy clinic. 

Vestibular assessment and  rehabilitation is provided via Advanced Practice Phystotherapists present in ENT clinics.  Other patients with complex neurological conditions are seen in the general outpatient clinic upon Neurology Consultant referral.

Stroke

Our stroke service provides inpatient assessment and treatment for patiens admitted with a stroke. Ourstroke team collabortes strongly with the mulstidisciplinary team to ensure optimum patient care is provided.  A Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team assist with the transition from the actue hospital setting to home where appropriate. This involves follow up rehabilitation in the home for a detind period of time upon discharge.
