Medical 1 consists of 147 beds, which are allocated over six seven-day and one five-day ward. There are also day wards and services. The specialities catered for by the Division include General Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care Medicine, Hepatology, and Immunology.
Nursing Team
Overall there are 194 Whole Time Equivalent nurses working within the Division.
This is inclusive of all grades of nursing inclusive of CNMs I, II, and III and Clinical Nurse Specialists.
Professional Development
Professional Development is actively supported within the Division. Currently there are many nurses who have availed of both comprehensive in-Hospital ongoing education and those who have pursued post graduate education including Post-Graduate Diploma and Masters level courses. The Division has a full time Clinical Practice Support Nurse who will assist in the transition of new staff and provide learning opportunities at local level.

| Patrick’s Ward | A 35 bedded acute medical ward which incorporates Infectious Diseases patients. Staff from St. Patrick’s ward also assists in the management of the Infectious Diseases out-patient clinic. There is one Clinical Nurse Specialist attached to this service. |
| Paul’s Ward | A 35 bedded Respiratory Ward. Attached to St. Paul’s Ward is the Respiratory Nursing Centre from which is based the COPD Outreach Team, Respiratory Nurse Specialist and two Cystic Fibrosis Nurse specialists. |
| Laurence’s Ward | A 31 bedded private general medical ward. |
| Teresa's Ward | A 17 bedded ward specialising in Gastroenterology. |
| Mary’s Ward | A 16 bedded medical ward which specialises in Rheumatology. |
| Palliative Care | The Palliative Care Team consists of a Consultant, Registrar, Social Work and three Palliative Care Nurse Specialist nurses. |
| Hepatology Unit | This unit treats patients who have been diagnosed with liver disease, Hepatitis C and B. We also treat state infected patients following the screening programme which was put in place following the discovery that Anti D immunoglobulin manufactured by the Irish Blood Transfusion Board was infected by Hepatitis C in 1994. We treat approximately 700 patients per year. |
| Rheumatology Department | The Rheumatology protocol clinic manages newly diagnosed and long term patients wit Arthritis-related diseases. This is a very busy outpatient service, a total of 5,465 attended in 2007. |
| Immunology Unit | The aim of the Immunology Unit is to provide high quality evidence based holistic care to patients with primary immunodeficiencies allergies and some autoimmune disorders while working as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team. |
