General Intensive Care Unit
The General Intensive care unit (ITU) is a 10 bedded unit. It provides care for patients with various illnesses encompassing a variety of specialities, including, respiratory, cardiovascular, urological, renal, and neurological. ITU offers post operative care to patients requiring critical care.
Each shift is co-ordinated by a senior ITU nurse. This nurse manages the unit and acts as a resource supporting and guiding nursing care.
The Nurse Education Co-ordinator develops and facilitates staff education programmes. While a Clinical Practice Support Nurse (CPSN) works to assist nurses to develop professionally and enhance nursing practice.
In October 2007, a Specialist Practice Programme in Intensive Care Nursing began. This six-month course provides nurses with the opportunity to develop their theoretical and practical intensive care nursing skills
Nurses have the opportunity to complete a post Graduate Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI). This course is fully funded and is the first year of a master’s programme.
Operating Theatre Department / Minor Day Theatre
The Operating Department consists of 11 theatre suites with attached anaesthetic rooms. There is a designated reception area and a recovery room. A day theatre offers a service to patients undergoing minor day case procedures.
A Clinical Nurse Manager III manages the department. Each area has a Clinical Nurse Manager who leads the nursing team. Nurses provide care to patients undergoing anaesthetic and a vast array of surgical procedures.
The Department is keen to promote nurses ongoing professional development. The Clinical Practice Support Nurse (CPSN) assists nurses of to develop professionally and acts as a resource to all levels of nursing staff.
A Post Graduate Diploma in Operating Department Nursing is available to nursing staff in conjunction with Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI). The Education Co-ordinator is involved in developing and facilitating this course.
Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)
This department works closely with Operating Theatres and other clinical areas in the Hospital. It is responsible for the reprocessing and distribution of reusable invasive medical devices.
Staff members in this area undertake local training to provide them with the necessary skills to perform this job. In addition staff members are supported to professionally develop by undertaking courses such as “SKILLVEC”. This programme is a nationally recognised educational programme for adult learners working in a variety of settings.
Interventional Radiology
The speciality of Interventional Radiology has expanded greatly in Beaumont Hospital in recent years. Nurses along with Radiologists and Radiographers play a vital role in caring for patients in this area. Diagnosis and treatment is given to patients with vascular, neurovascular and gastrointestinal disorders.
Nurses require a number of skills including those associated with caring for patients undergoing anaesthesia and invasive procedures.
It is hoped that a post registration course in Interventional Radiology will be developed for nurses in the near future.
St Finbar's Day Ward
St. Finbar's day ward is a surgical unit where patients are admitted for planned surgical procedures. They are then discharged home on the same day. The ward consists of a room with 20 trolleys, a room with 2 trolleys and a minor area that has 8 chairs. Please see the St Finbar's website for comprehensive information about the ward.
Endoscopy Unit
The Endoscopy carries out circa 11,000 procedures including gastroscopy, colonoscopy and bronchoscopy on an annual basis.
