ELECTIVE SURGERY

The following information is relevant to you if you are attending for a planned elective procedure or surgery

  • Elective Day case Surgery  – admitted and discharged on the same day
  • Elective Inpatient Surgery – admitted to hospital for more than 24hours)

All patients will continue to be contacted by the Hospital about their surgical procedure.

Please do not come to the Hospital for an appointment unless you are contacted by us and asked to attend. 

  • Patients are being asked to attend no more than 15 minutes before their scheduled surgical procedure time as advised on correspondence from the hospital or during the phone call from the hospital confirming the surgery.
  • Please check in with main reception and you will be directed to admissions
  • Facemasks are still required to be worn by all patients attending a healthcare setting and for those who may have to accompany them

If you have a temperature or are feeling unwell, please do not attend for your surgical procedure. Please phone/email the hospital contact on your letter from the hospital to re-schedule.

  • All Patients attending St Josephs Hospital, Raheny are to attend via Main Entrance and check in at main reception.
  • Attend on your own if possible.
  • If you have a temperature or are feeling unwell, please do not attend for your surgical procedure. Please phone/email the hospital contact on your letter from the hospital to re-schedule.

 

Prior to attending the Beaumont or St Josephs's Hospital for your procedure please note the following:

  • You may be asked to attend the hospital or take part in a phone pre-assessment prior to your surgery. You will be given specific instructions regarding medication at the time. Please ensure you inform the hospital of any and all medications you are currently taking.
  • Please have a bath/shower on the evening prior to your admission.
  • Patients are requested not to wear make-up or nail varnish or gel nails etc.
  • Please leave valuables (watches, jewellery, large sums of cash etc) at home.
  • For daycase patients slippers and dressing gown will suffice. For patients who will have an overnight stay we advise slippers, dressing gown and fresh night ware for each expected night of stay. Pyjamas etc must be changed daily.
  • If you suffer from any allergies please inform your consultant and the pre-assessment team and the nursing team on arrival.
  • If you are in doubt as to the type of anaesthesia your surgery will require please contact the hospital via the contact details on your surgical procedure appointment letter. This is very important as you may need to stop or modify medication usage for a number of weeks prior to surgery.
  • If you are under 16 years of age, a parent’s or guardian will be required to sign an Operation/Anaesthetic Consent Form.
  • It is important that you bring all current medication/inhalers/prescriptions with you on the day of admission.Please bring your medical card and/or private medical insurance details with you; otherwise you will be billed directly for your treatment.
  • If you have any special dietary requirements such as coeliac diet please inform the nursing staff on arrival.

Local Anaesthetic:

Patients having a local anaesthetic may have their normal diet unless otherwise instructed. Diabetic patients can take medication and normal diet.

General Anaesthetic:

If you are having a general anaesthetic do not eat or drink anything after midnight (this includes water) the night before the procedure. You should not use chewing gum on the morning of the procedure as this stimulates gastric juices.

If you are having general anaesthetic  and If you are on the contraceptive pill, hormone replacement therapy, heart tablets, aspirin, warfarin, Plavix, epilepsy or diabetes medications please ask your consultant or GP’s advice at least 7 days before attending for treatment to allow for the medication to be discontinued prior to surgery if so advised.

After a general anaesthetic your co-ordination may be affected and logical thinking may be temporarily interrupted. It is therefore necessary for safety reasons that you be collected from the hospital if being discharged on the same day as the procedure.

It is also important that you remain with a responsible adult for approximately 24 hours post discharge and it is suggested that patients living alone make suitable arrangements.

In the 24 hours following the general anaesthetic you cannot drive, operate machinery, cook or consume alcoholic drinks.
