Beaumont Hospital
Pain, whether acute or chronic is individual, subjective and often very complex. It can lead to significant, burden, distress and functional impairment for those affected.
Our pain team aim to provide a comprehensive service based on your individual needs and best evidenced based practice.Beaumont Hospital provides a comprehensive pain management service for acute and chronic pain patients in both an inpatient and outpatient capacity.
Chronic Pain Management:
We provide a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management. Our aim is to help you to manage your pain appropriately and to improve your quality of life.
Inpatient Acute Pain Service:
We provide support to patients experiencing acute pain while admitted to Beaumont Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital Raheny. The service is co-ordinated by a CNS in Pain Management together with the pain consultants.
Chronic Pain Referrals:
Your GP will refer you to the Chronic Outpatient service via Health Link the National GP Referral Service. All referrals are triaged (reviewed) by the consultant’s team on a weekly basis.
Inpatient Referrals:
Your primary team will refer you to the acute pain service via an internal hospital referral portal if required.
On referral to the pain service you will be assessed by a member of our team where a detailed history and physical examination will be conducted.
The clinical nurse specialist assesses post-operative patients receiving epidural analgesia or patient controlled analgesia on a daily basis (Mon – Fri). The service is covered by that anaesthetist on call out of hours.
The clinical nurse specialist and pain registrar triage all inpatient referrals to the pain service on a daily basis. All patients are discussed with the consultants in pain medicine.
The role of interventional therapies is limited in the management of chronic pain. Some patients may require injections for diagnostic or treatment purposes, but this will be determined on an individual basis.
Pharmacological treatment of chronic pain conditions is only recommended following an inadequate response to non-pharmacological treatment. Your pain medications and best options will be discussed in detail with you at your consultation.
The Pain Service provide advanced pain modalities such as Spinal Cord Stimulation and Intrathecal Drug Delivery to suitable patients. The service also provides sub-specialised care to patients with facial pain and trigeminal neuralgia and spasticity.
The iPainCentre is Beaumont Hospitals integrated community based pain service. The service follows best evidence for the management of non-specific low back pain, radicular pain, widespread pain and fibromyalgia syndrome. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for those living with chronic pain in our community.
