Clinical trials for cancer treatments aim to find new and better treatments and to help to improve outcomes in cancer patients.
The Cancer Clinical Trials & Research Unit (CCTU), Beaumont Hospital, (RCSI Hospital Group) conducts clinical, translational and outcomes research inpatients with cancer across the Dublin North - North East region. The CCTU is part of the department of Medicine and all research is led by Consultant Medical Oncologists and Haematologists
A key aim of the work is to learn more about the pathophysiology of malignancy and to deliver new therapies to improve quality-of-life and cancer survival, by conducting high quality research in compliance with EU, national and international regulations. Strategic oversight is provided by the Medical Director, Professor Patrick Morris MD, in conjunction with the Programme Manager, Keith Egan. Together they work with eleven Co-Investigators (5 Medical Oncology Consultants & 6 Haematology Consultants). Patients treated on clinical trials receive experimental therapy in Beaumont Hospital either with or in lieu of other standard anticancer therapy. Clinical trial treatments are generally delivered in the Oncology and Haematology Day Wards, Beaumont Hospital. Clinical trials allow patients to get access to new and potentially better therapies.
The new Cancer Strategy (2017-2026) identifies the need to expand cancer clinical trials in Ireland. The strategy now lists as a Key Performance indicator an enrolment figure of 6% (to therapeutic trials annually). The strategy recognises that “The positive impact of research activity, including clinical trials, on the care of patients is evident. An aim will be to develop a culture in the cancer care system that values research and is supportive of those who actively engage in it.
