Dr. Ciara O'Connor graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 2010. During her time in RCSI, Dr. O'Connor was the recipient of the Dr John O'Leary Gold Medal in General Practice. Prior to studying medicine, Dr. O'Connor spent three years completing a Bachelor of Education degree. While undertaking basic specialist training in general internal medicine, membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) and Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP UK) were obtained (2013). A Doctor of Medicine (MD), degree from the University of Limerick School of Medicine was conferred in 2017. The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland George Greene Medal for research in pathology was received in 2017.
Higher specialist training in Clinical Microbiology was completed between 2013 and 2018. Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom, (FRCPath) was awarded in 2017 and subsequently Fellowship of the Faculty of Pathology (FFPath) of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2020. Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI) was awarded in 2025.
Before taking up her current position in Beaumont Hospital in 2021, Dr Ciara O'Connor worked as a locum Consultant Microbiologist in St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK.
Dr. O'Connor is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences and contributes to undergraduate medical education. She is the Antimicrobial Stewardship lead in Beaumont Hospital and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland Specialist Training Committee for Clinical Microbiology.
