A gastroscopy is a procedure that uses a flexible tube to see inside your oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and first part of your small intestine. Small biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken during a gastroscopy.
A colonoscopy is a procedure that uses a flexible tube to see the inside of your large bowel (the colon). This test is used to identify the cause of gut- related problems. You will receive information on preparing for your colonscopy before your test. There is also a video link on how to take your bowel preparation on this webpage.
A sigmoidoscopy is a procedure to look at part of your large bowel (colon). It uses a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope. This examination helps us to diagnose your symptoms, or check the condition of your bowel, or take samples (biopsies) and remove polyps if needed.
A bronchoscopy is a procedure to look directly at the airways in the lungs through a thin, lighted tube (bronchoscope) which is inserted into the airways, usually through the nose or mouth.
An endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) lets us examine the lining of the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and small intestine (duodenum) and the organs that surround them.
This test is used to treat complex polypectomy, ensure correct placement of endoluminal stents and facilitate endoscopic placement of feeding tubes.
EBUS uses an ultrasound scan to take pictures inside and outside the lungs. Sometimes it can be used to look at the oesophagus. With EBUS a thin tube is passed down your windpipe through your mouth.
An ERCP is used to diagnose and treat problems with the biliary system (liver, gallbladder and bile duct).
ESD is undertaken whilst you are having a gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy procedure. ESD is a more advanced endoscopic (examining the inside of the body) technique for removal of large polyps from the lining of the intestinal wall. One of the main advantages of this procedure over other types of polyp removal procedures is that it removes the polyp in a single piece.
