The Occupational Therapy (OT) Department provides a high quality service to people with physical, psychological and social problems to enable them to maximise their function. Occupational therapists help people to do the everyday activities that they want and need to do when faced with illness, injury, and disability or challenging life event.
We provide assessment and treatment to inpatients and outpatients with a range of different conditions. We have a team of over 40 OTs working in the following areas:
Inpatient services
Outpatient/other services
The OT Department is committed to achieving the best possible outcome for patients and implements service improvements in line with the priorities of the hospital in such areas as:
Referrals for Occupational Therapy are accepted from the inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary teams in the hospital only. Unfortunately, we do not accept referrals directly from GPs.
This therapy led service targets a specific group of patients referred by the GP to the plastics Consultant. It recently treated its 1000th patient.
This service reduces wait times and provides early intervention to suitable plastics patients, to improve patient outcomes & satisfaction and to identify patients who require urgent surgical intervention.
An additional aspect of the service is therapist led corticosteroid injections for specific hand pathology.
vFAC triages ED documentation and imaging daily to determine the best pathway of care for patients.
Patients may be referred directly to OT hand therapy, physio, to the traditional orthopaedic clinic, a dual pathway to OT/Physio and clinic, or discharged from the vFAC service.
This service:
ESD provides OT and Physiotherapy rehabilitation in the patient’s own home following orthopaedic injury. On average, patients who are discharged from hospital via the ESD pathway have their hospital stay reduced by 5 days.
Aim of ESD in Orthopaedics:
Our multidisciplinary stroke early supported discharge team supports patients with home based therapy following their inpatient stay for a stroke
Along with our colleagues in the Physiotherapy Department we have teamed up with the National Ambulance Service to provide a community based service for the Older person aimed at reducing Emergency Department presentations and seeking alternative pathways of care for the Older person in need of health care professionals.
