Our Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department (MPCE) provide expert scientific and engineering support to Beaumont Hospital and provides external medical physics service to other public hospitals. We provide a wide range of specialised scientific and technical services to ensure exceptional patient care.
Our team consists of 8 Clinical Engineers, 13 Physicists and 2 Administrators. We use our scientific and clinical knowledge to advance patient care, working closely with our colleagues in; radiology, neurology, surgery, cardiology, anaesthetics, critical care, endoscopy and general medicine.
We, as a department, support equipment throughout its lifecycle in the hospital which includes; procurement, maintenance, repair and quality assurance testing.
Our Clinical Engineers are specialists in the application of engineering principles and technology in the delivery of healthcare. They work to improve the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of medical equipment and systems, and may also be involved in development, and testing of new medical devices. Our team play a critical role in ensuring that medical equipment is properly maintained and calibrated, and that it is used safely and effectively.
Our physics team are key members of the nuclear medicine team in Radiology and have specific responsibilities for the scientific and technical aspects of the service.
Our team play a key role in surgical planning using computer software for a range of surgeries. This can involve processes such as mapping out important parts of the brain or calculating brain volumes from the patient’s MRI images.
We are also responsible for testing the MRI machines and training staff on all aspects of MRI safety, including imaging patients with complicated implants.
Our team of specialised Medical Physicists provide advice regarding the use of radiation to Beaumont Hospital, its patients and staff. Our team are here to ensure the use of radiation in our hospital is safe and meets the highest standards.
Our team also provide radiation protection services to other public hospitals in the RCSI Hospital Group. We travel between these hospitals testing equipment, performing risk assessments, advising on new equipment using radiation and the amount of radiation shielding that should be used with this new equipment to keep the public, staff and patients safe.
