About Us

The Department of Histopathology is part of the Clinical Directorate of Laboratory Medicine and is comprised of the following subsections:

• Routine Histopathology
• Immunohistochemistry and access to Molecular Diagnostics
• Non-Gynaecological Cytology
• Neuropathology
• Electron Microscopy
• Renal Pathology
• The Irish National Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease Surveillance Unit (CJD)

Further Information

As well as providing a service to the hospital and local GP catchment area, it provides a histopathology service for the national referral centres in neurosciences and renal transplantation. As a histopathology laboratory in a designated cancer centre, the laboratory provides diagnostic support for a range of tertiary referrals such as breast cancer.

The department participates in the North Dublin rotation for the training of histopathology NCHDs and is linked to undergraduate teaching of medicine in the RCSI.

Extensive research is carried out within the department. It also holds strong research links with several institutions in Ireland including RCSI, St James’s Hospital, Trinity College, UCD and DCU. In collaboration with the RCSI, two bio-banks collect tissue: one containing somatic neoplasms and the other of which is a brain bank.

Routine & Urgent Service

Please ensure samples arrive in the laboratory as early as possible in the working day.

There is no routine Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday service

Out of hours: The Medical Scientist on call may only be contacted through hospital switch. A 24 hour on-call consultant service is available.
