General Liaison Service

We provide a specialist consultation Liaison service for treatment of illness at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. Patients may present with psychiatric symptoms directly related to their medical or surgical treatment. Additionally we treat people struggling to cope with medical illness or end of life issues. We also assess those patients with mental health problems that may arise or have been aggravated by their admission to hospital, or may be manifesting as physical symptomatology.

We provide consults to our colleagues in the Emergency Department for patients presenting with acute medical or surgical needs including providing comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment of those presenting with self-harm and suicide related ideation.

A multidisciplinary team led by each of the Department Consultant psychiatrists assesses and manages all of the general medical and surgical in-patient referrals and all those referred for psychiatric evaluation in the Emergency Department.

In addition an active outpatient service for General Liaison Psychiatry is delivered by Prof Siobhan Mc Hale, Prof Mary Cannon and Dr Helen Barry.
