Interstitial Lung Disease

What is Interstitial lung diseases (ILD)

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) or pulmonary fibrosis (as it is more commonly known) are a group of chronic lung diseases which can lead to scarring and stiffening of the lung. In some people it has no identifiable cause, termed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), in others it can be associated with rheumatological diseases or environmental exposures. Support for patients can involve specialised antifibrotic medicines, symptom management, pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen therapy and in some cases referral for lung transplant assessment.

About

Our main priority is to deliver excellent multidisciplinary care to patients with interstitial lung diseases. We have a focus on holistic and evidence based treatments and care. We are the site for the Irish Familial Pulmonary Fibrosis Centre which seeks to find new treatments for patients and families with lung fibrosis.

We work very closely with colleagues in physiotherapy, rheumatology, radiology, immunology, surgery, genetics, dietetics and palliative care to deliver multidisciplinary diagnosis and care. We are very active in research with clinical studies of new treatments and disease monitoring. We also recruit patients who can donate samples for research carried out in the laboratory.

Referrals

We accept referrals from both primary and secondary care physicians through Healthlink, and from the respiratory integrated care specialist hub.
