Interventional Radiology Service

What is interventional radiology?

Interventional Radiology uses imaging technology such as X-ray, CT or ultrasound to look inside patients and perform minimally invasive procedures. The vast majority of procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic or sedation with only a very few complex cases requiring a general anaesthetic.

How to get an appointment for an interventional radiology procedure?

  • GP patient: A GP cannot refer a patient for an interventional radiology procedure at Beaumont hospital. Patients require a doctor's referral from within the hospital for an interventional radiology procedure.
  • Outpatient: If you have attended a consultant appointment in Beaumont and they have requested an interventional radiology procedure for you an appointment letter will be sent in the post to your address.

Where will my an interventional radiology procedure be done?

Your procedure will be performed in the Radiology department, lower ground floor of Beaumont Hospital.

Preparation

There are various preparations that you may need to make, depending on the type of IR procedure you are having. If preparation is required, you will be informed of this in your appointment letter.

What happens after the IR procedure?

In most cases, you will remain in the Radiology Department recovery area for a short time, under radiology nurse observation. The results will be sent to the doctor who referred you. If you are a hospital inpatient, the results will be available to the doctors looking after you on the ward. Results are not routinely sent to your GP unless requested. Results are not sent to your home address.

Do I need to bring anything?

It is advised that you wear comfortable clothing that can be easily changed. Minimal jewellery is also advised, as this will need to be removed. Please do not being any valuables
