What is an ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan, sometimes called a sonogram, is a procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to view internal organs and produce images of parts of the body. This examination does not involve the use of x-rays. Ultrasound examinations are performed in a dimly lit room, to allow for images on the screen to be seen more clearly. A transducer probe is moved back and forth against the skin surface with the aid of a cold gel to obtain an image.

For intimate scans, such as transvaginal or transrectal ultrasounds, the probe is gently inserted into the vagina or rectum for clearer images of specific organs, such as the uterus or prostate. These exams are sensitive and performed with care and respect, helping to provide vital details that external scans cannot capture.

How to get an appointment for an Ultrasound scan?

GP patient: To get an appointment for an ultrasound your GP must send the referral to us via Healthlink. The referrals are reviewed and an appointment letter will be sent in the post to your address.

Outpatient: If you have attended a consultant appointment in Beaumont and they have requested an ultrasound for you an appointment letter will be sent in the post to your address.

Where will my Ultrasound be done?

Ultrasounds are performed in 2 locations:

  • Radiology department, lower ground floor of Beaumont Hospital.
  • Ultrasound department OMNI shopping centre, Santry. Your appointment letter will clearly state the location of your ultrasound.

How do I get my results?

Your results will be sent to the doctor that referred you for the scan. If your GP did not send you for the scan then they will not automatically receive the results. Results are not sent to your home address.

If a Consultant in the hospital referred you, you will need to phone the secretary to make an appointment to see the team to discuss your results or request a call back from one of the doctors on the team.
