The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics provides evidence-based nutrition support to inpatients, outpatients and those attending day services in Beaumont hospital. We aim to use the most up-to-date health and scientific research on food, health and disease which we translate to help people make the appropriate lifestyle and food choices for their health. We provide dietetic services as part of the hospitals multidisciplinary approach to patient care, to a wide range of specialities.
We are a department of approximately 30 CORU registered dietitians (the regulatory body for Health & Social Care Professionals) including clinical specialist dietitians, senior dietitians and entry level dietitians, who provide nutritional care across all specialities in the hospital. Dietetic care is provided to in-patients in Beaumont Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital and out-patients in Beaumont Hospital, St Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny Community Nursing Unit (RCNU) and the Satellite Out Patients service at Omni Park.
We work in collaboration with the medical teams, health and social care professionals, nursing and catering departments in Beaumont Hospital. We also work in collaboration with dietitians working in Primary Care, Chronic Disease Hubs and other hospitals. Our team also provides many education and training programmes for nursing staff, doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team on all aspects of nutrition. Participation in audit and research is also encouraged in our department.
Our service is dedicated primarily to inpatients of Beaumont Hospital. However, we also provide a limited service to outpatients within specific specialties. Referrals are received from Beaumont Hospital staff for patients attending a medical team in Beaumont Hospital.
The dietetic team delivers DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) which is a structured group education programme, providing skills-based training to adults with Type 1 diabetes to have autonomy, competence and confidence in diabetes self-management. Broadly it aims to support people with Type 1 diabetes to lead as normal and flexible a life as possible, whilst also maintaining blood glucose levels within healthy targets, and reduce both the short and long-term risk of diabetes complications.
The dietetic team delivers a yearly training course which aims to educate and support clinical staff and public health nurses on replacing gastrostomy tubes when safe and appropriate to do so, to help recognise when it is unsafe to replace a gastrostomy tube as well as educate staff on issues related to the management of gastrostomy tubes. After attending this study day, each participant must carry out the procedure under the supervision of a GI Consultant / Senior GI Registrar in the Endoscopy Unit of Beaumont Hospital before being deemed competent.
The dietetic department provides student placements for student dietitians from the BSc Human Nutrition & Dietetics in TUD / TCD and the MSc Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics in UCD
Indirect calorimetry is carried out by dietitians on suitable patients in our 3 Intensive Care Units. It is a practical method to measure accurate energy expenditure in patients, and is the gold standard for this measurement. It improves accuracy of energy prescription by >40%, thus avoiding undernutrition and over-nutrition in this critically ill patient group. Without this equipment, energy expenditure, and therefore nutrition requirements, are estimated using equations.
