Information delivery is crucial to health professionals and patients for the delivery of their care. The ICT Department in Beaumont Hospital provide a range of ICT services to support and enable patient care.
The ICT Department is responsible for developing and implementing new technologies as well as supporting existing systems, IT security and services for the benefit of our patients and staff. The department is responsible for the procurement of application software packages/technology in line with authorised policy decisions.
The department is divided into a number of functional areas - project development, applications & integration, infrastructure & network support, IT training, data & analytics, telephony, internal communications & the Data Protection Office (DPO).
Over the next 18 months Beaumont Hospital will replace their core IT legacy systems. This will revolutionise healthcare delivery throughout the hospital and will be an opportunity to improve existing practices, processes and how we do things alongside the core systems replacements. We have recently replaced our laboratory system and a new patient administration, order communications, patient accounts and ED system will come on stream in the middle of 2025. The new systems will ensure that staff have faster and better access to the right patient information, available at the point of care.
The project development, applications & Integration team are responsible for the implementation and maintenance of new and current ICT projects within the hospital in line with business needs. Much of the work is around application integration enabling applications and systems built separately to share data and work together.
The infrastructure team is responsible for the day-to-day operational support of Hospital systems, monitoring performance of the ICT infrastructure including network performance, PCs and printers, servers, virtual and SAN storage facilities and miscellaneous technologies. This unit is also responsible for managing the telephony stack.
The IT training team support the development of systems and provide a teaching/training service to ensure clinical and other members of staff are educated and trained on information systems appropriate to their role and responsibilities.
The service desk is the main point of contact for all hospital functions and provide 1st and 2nd line support on a wide range of IT activities to staff on all day-to-day IT issues which arise. The team liaises with external vendors, manages support contracts and procures hardware and other technologies as required. This service manages upwards of 23,000 calls from staff annually.
The Business Analysis team are responsible for providing analytics and reports to the hospital to manage KPIs both internally and nationally. They also monitor performance and quality control of the data held by the hospital and provide on-going reports to management to aid in the prioritisation of business and information needs.
The Data Protection Office sits under the ICT function. The Data Protection Officer is a core monitors how hospital data is collected, used and shared, to ensure patients and service users personal data is protected and that data subject rights are fulfilled.
