The Medical Social Worker’s role is to assist patients and their families with any psychological, emotional, social or practical difficulties during their hospital stay. The team work as part of the hospital’s multidisciplinary teams incorporating our medical, nursing and Health and Social Care colleagues.
Medical Social Workers will assess the impact of new or existing illnesses on patients and their families and support them through their time in hospital. We help with discharge planning and liaise with any community services you may need on your behalf. We provide a service to all inpatients, those presenting to Accident and Emergency and some specialist outpatient services. We work across two sites, Beaumont Hospital and St Joseph’s Raheny campus.

We support our patients with issues such as:
Referrals are received from Beaumont Hospital staff for patients attending a medical team in Beaumont Hospital. Patients can also self-refer through the main office.
Our service is dedicated primarily to inpatients of Beaumont Hospital. However, we also provide a limited service to outpatients within specific specialties. Motor Neuron Disease, patients who attend our cystic fibrosis service, psychiatry, oncology and infectious diseases.
Wellness Recovery Action Programme. Recovery based programme for patients who have experienced Mental Health problems which may or may not be associated with their physical health condition.
We ensure compliance with education around Children First legislation and provide a supportive role for staff.
We play an integral role in co-ordinating Safeguarding responses where appropriate.
Our oncology team run the Climb programme for children aged 6 to 12 who are experiencing the impact of a parent’s cancer diagnosis. The programme is run over 6 weeks and aims to build upon the child’s strengths and increase their ability to cope with stress associated with the parent’s illness.
We host both Masters and Degree Level Social Work Students from a range of universities around the country.
