Professor Sulaiman's research interests have focused on understanding how the human microbiome interacts with the host immune response, thereby affecting health and disease states such as COPD, lung cancer and bronchiectasis. The study of the microbiome using ribosomal DNA sequence has now opened an opportunity to directly characterize resident microbial flora without the need for bacterial culture. By studying how the lung microbiome alters the lung immune response Professor Sulaiman hopes to understand the pathophysiological changes that occur early in disease and may lead to new therapeutic targets.
