In the Physiotherapy Department we take a ‘whole person’ approach to health and wellbeing. This means that each patient’s general lifestyle as well as their medical condition is taken into account. Our physiotherapists provide services that develop, maintain and restore a patient’s maximum movement and functional ability. They can help patients at any stage of life, when movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, diseases, disorders, conditions or environmental factors. At the core is our patients’ involvement in their own therapy. This is achieved through education, awareness, empowerment and participation The Physiotherapy Department provides inpatient and outpatient physiotherapy services for patients under our care. All our patients are individually assessed and therapy is provided on an individual basis and in conjunction with other disciplines where appropriate.
Our physiotherapy department is made up of a team of 90 CORU registered physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants and administration staff who provide a 24/7, 365 day per year service which includes after hours emergency care, and a weekend respiratory and orthopaedic service.
Our aim is to provide the highest quality evidenced based care to our patients.
Our core clinical areas consist of Musculoskeletal, Neurosciences, Oncology, Respiratory, Care of the Older Persons and Acute Rehabilitation.
We also have physiotherapists working in Advanced Practice roles in consultant led clinics across numerous specialities.
We play an important role in pre-hospital care in the form of our Pathfinder service, and we facilitate early discharge from the hospital through our early supported discharge teams.
In addition, our physiotherapists are actively involved in areas of specialised research as well as under- and postgraduate education.
All our physiotherapy patients will be under the care of a Beaumont Hospital consultant. We have an electronic based referral system for inpatients and outpatients, and our physiotherapists triage all referrals daily.
We’ve teamed up with our colleagues in our occupational therapy department and with the National Ambulance Service to provide a pathway for the older person who contacts the emergency services (999). This service aims to reduce Emergency Department presentations and seeks alternative pathways of care better suited to the patient’s needs.
We have advanced practice physiotherapists working in a variety of clinical settings as first contact practitioners. In these services physiotherapists work alongside consultants in outpatient clinics to provide and specialist based care.
Our multidisciplinary team supports patients with home based therapy following their inpatient stay following a stroke.
Our team consists of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation to provide care to our patients in their own homes following their inpatient stay for an orthopaedic injury.
We have a dedicated student education service with longstanding links with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and University College Dublin. We facilitate student education and clinical placements throughout the academic year.
