Beaumont Hospital
The pathology laboratory provides local, regional and national diagnostic services in all laboratory medicine disciplines to help in the diagnosis of illnesses and the monitoring of the treatment of those illnesses. Laboratory investigations are performed and the results of laboratory tests are made available to patients through their clinicians or GPs.
The Clinical Directorate of Laboratory Medicine consists of nine laboratories – Blood Transfusion, Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Histopathology, Immunology, Microbiology, Near Patient Testing, Molecular Pathology and the National Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Service for Solid Organ Transplantation; a large specimen reception and a large Phlebotomy area. Further information is available under each laboratory section.
The Clinical Directorate of Laboratory Medicine is located on the lower ground floor of the main hospital. The specimen reception area is located at the entrance to the laboratory. This area receives samples into the laboratory from internal and external sources including from GPs, Nursing Homes and referred samples from other hospitals. From here, samples are distributed to the relevant laboratories within the Directorate.
The laboratory provides an out of hours on-call emergency service 365 days a year - see individual laboratory sections for specific hours of service and emergency on-call details.
The Laboratory is an Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) accredited laboratory, see www.inab.ie for full scope of accreditation.
The NHISSOT is accredited by the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI).
The Beaumont Hospital Laboratory Users Guide provides information on the tests provided within the Directorate along with required sample types, reference ranges and expected turnaround times of these tests.
Guidance on appropriate ordering and relevant extra clinical information available in Referral Information and Patient Information section.
The Directorate welcomes all feedback from its users. Verbal feedback may be given to any member of staff. In the event of a complaint, there may be a resolution at point of contact or the case may be of a serious nature that requires further action. All complaints (verbal or written) are recorded directly onto Q-Pulse, and are classified as per the non-conformity procedure in place within the Directorate. If a complaint cannot be resolved at local level it will be forwarded to the hospital's Patient Liaison officer.
The Clinical Directorate of Laboratory Medicine maintains a database of GP contract details for use in the event of critical result notification. All GP practices requesting laboratory tests must provide contact details. Please complete and return the GP registration form below to paulaconran@beaumont.ie or deniseflood@beaumont.ie
