The Department of Liaison Psychiatry in Beaumont Hospital facilitates early identification and coordinated expert care of patients with mental health problems and substance abuse related issues, alongside our colleagues treating medical and surgical conditions. We recognize the bidirectional link between the mind and the body and the importance of addressing both to optimise outcome for patients. We provide specialist psychiatric and psychosocial assessment, diagnosis and management interventions. In 2023 we provided over 3500 assessments of patients attending the hospital.
Our psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists and social workers collaborate to provide a holistic and multidisciplinary team approach to mental health problems for those within the hospital.
Additionally, we provide consults to our colleagues in the Emergency Department for patients presenting with acute medical or surgical needs including presentations with self-harm and suicide related ideation.
In addition to direct patient care, our department has a firm reputation of serving as clinical leaders and mentors in prestigious clinical and research fellowships including ASPIRE. Our department maintains strong links delivering teaching with the RCSI, and provide senior advisory roles nationally within the HSE and within the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Ireland.
The out of hours Emergency Department consult based mental health care support is provided by the HSE North Dublin Community Mental Health Service.
