Mental Health Services for Older Persons – Liaison Service: The presence of psychiatric co-morbidity in those over 65 years in the general hospital is common and an independent predictor of poor outcomes for older adults.
The provision of Liaison Psychiatry services for those over 65, provides the general hospital with a dedicated specialist service that can address the mental health needs of people over 65 who are being treated primarily for physical health problems and symptoms. The MHSOP Liaison service operates on a consultation-liaison psychiatric model for the older persons within the acute medical and surgical wards in Beaumont Hospital and other campus facilities including Raheny Community Nursing Unit (RCNU) and Saint Joseph’s Rehabilitation Unit (SJRU) Geriatrician services. The MHSOP Liaison service provide assessments for in-patients with complex mental health needs and those with behavioural difficulties due to Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) and complex deliriums, advising on interventions, prescribing, discharge planning, education and support within acute care setting and primary care settings on discharge. On a case by case basis those initially assessed within the Beaumont hospital setting may need follow up with the MHSOP community service upon their discharge as an in-patient.
